A flyover of four Harrier jets over Raymond James Stadium for the Outback Bowl has been canceled, a Marine Corps spokesman said today.
The cancellation is out of respect for the relatives of a Harrier AV-8B pilot who died Monday when his jet crashed about a mile from an air station in Cherry Point, N.C., Marine Corps spokesman Maj. Eric Dent said.
"We talked to Outback Bowl officials," Dent said. "And we've agreed, that out of respect for the family, we won't support the flyover."
Capt. Alberto Bencosme was on a training mission on Monday when a canopy sensor light began to flash, Dent said. Bencosme turned around to head back to the air station to have it checked when his jet crashed.
Bencosme would have been the standby pilot had the Outback Bowl flyover occurred and one of the other pilots had a technical problem, Dent said.
