TAMPA - TAMPA - TAMPA - A lockdown of Blake High School was lifted about 3 p.m. today after authorities searched the school and found an unloaded handgun in a locker, Hillsborough County school district officials said.
Two 16-year-old male students and a 15-year-old female student were arrested and each charged with possession of a weapon on a school campus, according to Tampa police. The Tampa Tribune is withholding the suspects' names because of their age.
A Blake High School resource officer received a tip late Friday morning that two students had brought a gun to school, police said. The officer searched two suspects but did not find a gun, police said.
The officer activated the lockdown about 1 p.m. as police searched the school at 1701 North Blvd., Tampa police spokeswoman Janelle McGregor said. During the lockdown, students were not allowed out of classrooms without adult supervision, McGregor said.
About 2:30 p.m., the 15-year-old student told a teacher that she had the gun in her locker, police said. Officers searched the locker and found the unloaded .25-caliber semiautomatic handgun inside, police said.
Why the students brought the gun to the performing and visual arts magnet school is still unclear, police said.
