MADEIRA BEACH - The Coast Guard diverted one of its helicopters from a training exercise today to lower a pump to a boat that was taking on water 40 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico, coast guard officials say.
The Julissa, a 46-foot fishing vessel, alerted authorities this morning that water had flooded the engine room, said Petty Officer Michael Case. With the pump, the crew managed to remove enough water so they could continue their voyage to Madeira Beach.
As of 3:15 p.m. today, the Julissa was only four miles from Madeira Beach, Case said. It was not known what caused the water to flood the boat.
