The basketball court at Ridgewood could soon be named after the program's first and only boys basketball coach, Gary Anders, if the Pasco County School Board approves the measure Tuesday.
The court would be called Anders Court if the board votes in favor of the request made by Ridgewood's principal and boys basketball coaching staff.
Anders earned his 500th victory Jan. 18 at Land O' Lakes. He started his coaching career at Hudson in 1979 before being hired as Ridgewood's boys basketball coach and athletic director when the school opened in the late 1980s. He has held both titles since.
The Rams are preparing to host the Class 5A-District 7 tournament and are going in as the No.1 seed after posting an undefeated record against district opponents.
JOYER RECEIVES FIRST OFFER: Wesley Chapel lineman Kamran Joyer has received the first of what promises to be several Division I scholarship offers. Joyer got the attention of many big-time programs after SunshinePreps.net made his highlight tape.
His father, Jack Joyer, said Tennessee was the first to throw its hat in for the 6-foot-4, 320-pound junior.
Kamran also received a visit from Florida coach Urban Meyer last week at school and received an invitation to the Gators' Junior Day, which was this past weekend.
The Class 5A All-State honorable mention has just begun what is going to be a busy spring.
Georgia is planning to meet with him today, and he is scheduled to visit Florida State this weekend.
He will participate in the Nike Combine on Feb. 23 in Orlando, where he will be ranked by Rivals.com, and then fly the next day to Notre Dame's Junior Day.
His younger brother, freshman Hunter Joyer, a fullback at Wesley Chapel, is going on all of Kamran's visits. The Joyer family is hoping to send both boys to the same college.
Kamran Joyer already has qualified academically and will graduate in December. He intends to make a commitment in May.
SALADINO WELCOMES WILDCATS: For only the second time in its history, this year's Saladino Tournament will include a team from outside Hillsborough County.
Tournament co-founder Tony Saladino said Thursday that Wesley Chapel has accepted entry into the field of teams for the 28th annual baseball tournament, which will be held during spring break at multiple sites around the county. Brandon will serve as the host site.
It will be the first time since 1983, the tournament's third year of existence, an out-of-county school is in the tournament. In 1983, Bradenton Manatee, St. Petersburg Gibbs and St. Petersburg Lakewood were in the 16-team field.
As of Thursday, 27 teams were scheduled for the tournament, Saladino said. Tampa Catholic again will participate, joining Wesley Chapel and the 25 public school teams.
New Wesley Chapel coach Chuck Yingling has some ties to Hillsborough County and the Saladino Tournament. Yingling previously was the coach at Tampa Catholic and his Crusaders team was a regular in the tournament in the late 1990s. Yingling led Tampa Catholic to a runner-up finish to Plant in 1998.
