TAMPA What a week it's been for Berkeley Prep senior Archie Barnes.
On Wednesday, the Bucs' former quarterback/defensive back announced his commitment to Vanderbilt and on Friday, on live television, the 6-foot-4 athlete had 26 points, seven rebounds and two blocks to lead Berkeley in a 60-47 win over rival Tampa Prep.
"It's a perfect way to end my senior year," Barnes said.
Berkeley Prep (21-4) lost to Tampa Prep in the Headmasters' Challenge on Jan. 12, 65-61. On Friday, the Bucs snapped the Terrapins' 19 game win streak.
"That makes it even better," said Berkeley junior guard Austin Suarez, who nearly pulled off a quadruple-double with six points, seven rebounds, seven assists and six steals.
Berkeley, ranked N0. 3 in the latest 3A state poll, jumped out to a 17-7 lead heading into the second quarter and went into the half with a score of 27-18. Tampa Prep (20-2) went on a 5-0 run to start the third quarter, but Suarez followed with a three-pointer to start a 7-0 run for Berkeley.
"The first two minutes of the third quarter were crucial for us," Suarez said.
Berkeley junior forward Johnathan Gray, who entered the game averaging just less than 18 points per game, got into foul trouble early and finished with only four points. Six-foot-7 senior forward David Waller led the Terrapins, ranked NO. 1 in the latest 1A poll, with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Berkeley head coach Bobby Reinhart said his team played a totally different game from the January meeting.
"We maintained our intensity the entire game," Reinhart said. "They made a few shots in the third quarter but we were resilient to that."
"Their effort level on the boards and going after lose balls was the difference in the game," Tampa Prep coach Joe Fenlon said.
Tampa Prep closed the deficit to 41-34 off a three-pointer from junior Jake Haslam going into the fourth quarter, but Barnes scored 10 of Berkeley's 19 fourth quarter point to help maintain the lead.
"We're working our hardest right now," Barnes said. "Ever since we lost to them last time, that's all we thought about. That loss hurt so bad."
"(Barnes) did a great job tonight, especially the way he guarded David Waller. He got his, but not in bunches."
JESUIT 73, TAMPA CATHOLIC 68: Jesuit completed a sweep of rival Tampa Catholic on Friday, led by senior guard Jake Seymour's 21 points. Charlie Mills added 18 points while center Phil Smith finished with 14.
James Didden led Tampa Catholic with a game-high 23 points.
"They dominated early," Tampa Catholic coach Don Dziagwa said. "We cut it to one point but we never tied or took the lead. It was your typical TC-Jesuit game."
PLANT 53, SICKLES 43: Senior forward Chandler Flom led Plant with 18 points while standout junior guard Sheldon Cooley added 16 points as Plant defeated Sickles in a showdown between two of the top teams in Hillsborough County.
"It was really a defensive game," Plant coach Mike Phillips said. "We played a 2-3 zone and they played a 2-3 zone. We were down by a bucket at halftime but we scored 25 points in the fourth quarter."
Phillips said Sickles junior guard Kelvin Daniels led the Gryphons with 14 points, including four three-pointers.
Also around the county, Boston College commit and 6-8 power forward Evan Ravenel scored a season-high 28 points with 10 rebounds to help Brandon beat Durant, 79-65.
