LAKELAND - Top-seeded Haines City jumped out to an early lead as the Hornets eliminated Spoto 34-19 Friday night in Class 4A-District 9 at Lakeland Kathleen.
Haines City got out to an early lead as Jasmine Acavedo proved what a team player she was, giving up on easy looks to dish the ball to her teammates.
"I liked my team's consistency, we set certain goals for ourselves each game, my team plays tensely and we seem to play better against our tougher opponents," said Hornets coach LaDreda Akins. "We only had two players back this season that ever had any playoff experience."
Led by Acavedo, a junior, and only two seniors on the roster, the Hornets played stellar defense against Spoto - never giving up more than 10 points in any quarter. Then again, the most Haines City (15-5) scored in any quarter was 11, in the first.
Spoto came out firing on all cylinders at the start of the third quarter, but turnovers, missed free throws and Haines City's outstanding rebounding kept the Hornets in front.
Brittany Lewis led the Spartans with six points while Brianna Thomas added five and Ruth Freeman had four.
