LARGO - Host Indian Rocks Christian (13-12) and Tampa Prep (9-10) will see which team can win two out of three when they meet for the Class 2A-District 9 girls basketball title tonight.
Indian Rocks defeated Bishop McLaughlin (5-15) 51-37, and Tampa Prep rolled over Calvary Christian (6-11) 60-23. The two finalists have played twice this season, with each winning on the other's home court.
In the first semifinal, Bishop McLaughlin jumped to a surprising early lead, but the Golden Eagles quickly took control, pulling to 21-12 at the end of the first quarter. Courtney St. Louis led the comeback with 14 first-quarter points and dominated the game. The junior forward ended with 29 points. Sophomore Ryan Ashburn added six points for the Eagles.
Kristen Pawlowski had 24 points and rebounded well for Bishop McLaughlin, which had only six players with no seniors on the team. The Indian Rocks depth wore down McLaughlin as the Golden Eagles used all 14 of their players.
"We are glad for the win, but we need to have a better effort tomorrow than we did tonight," said Indian Rocks coach Phil Farver.
Tampa Prep took over its game early, leading 15-6 after a quarter. The pressing Terrapins continually forced the Warriors into turnovers and converted them into points. Tampa Prep was led by junior Ayala Wasser, who had 41 points. She scored 10 in the first, 13 in the second, nine in the third and nine in the fourth. Becca Gwyn added 10 points for the winners.
Sami Mauder led Calvary Christian with 10 points.
