SEMINOLE - Lakewood guard Kerah Nelson's 19-point night led her team past Gibbs 47-34 in the Class 5A-District 11 girls basketball tournament Friday, extending its postseason play.
Swarming defense by the Spartans kept the game's momentum on their side. Lakewood played strong and hustled throughout the game.
"We have a complete team. We got a good guard at post, we got great shooting guards and a center that can play down low," Nelson said about her team's solid play.
In the second semifinal, Boca Ciega defeated Dixie Hollins 64-40, displaying perfect fundamental basketball such as quick hands, crisp passing and unselfish play.
"One of our main motivations is that we have a 15-year streak of making it into postseason play," Boca Ciega coach William White said. "We have a bull's-eye on our backs and we embrace that.
"We really stepped up in the second half tonight and our depth really came into play as we were able to get fresh legs out there."
