VALRICO - Top-seeded Tampa Bay Tech and No. 2 Freedom will meet tonight in the Class 5A-District 8 championship after the Titans and Patriots won their semifinal games Friday.
TBT had little trouble in its 64-44 victory against No. 4 King, while Freedom had a tougher time with No. 3 Bloomingdale, winning 42-39.
The Titans swept the two regular-season meetings with the Patriots, winning by 11 and 17 points.
Two sophomores led the way in TBT's win Friday.
Re Re Jenrette had a triple-double, finishing with 12 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists, and J.J. Rodriguez scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
"Re Re and J.J. really stepped up," Titans coach Heather Glezen said. "We didn't play a complete 32 minutes, but it's probably the closest we've come."
TBT (25-1) delivered the knockout punch early, jumping in front 16-2 late in the first quarter. The Titans eventually upped their lead to 22 on four different occasions in the second. The Lions never got closer than 15 the rest of the way.
King was led by Davethia Foster (16 points) and Samara Shepherd (13). G.G. Hernandez added 13 points for TBT.
In Freedom's win, the Patriots watched their 11-point second-quarter lead vanish before rallying for the victory.
The Patriots (19-7) used a late 7-0 run to go in front 42-37 with 18.4 seconds remaining. Maggie Coker's two free throws got the Bulls within 42-39 with 10 seconds remaining. After Freedom missed the front end of a one-and-one, Paris Moore dribbled down court and had a good look at a 3-pointer, but her shot hit off the front of the rim.
Charlet Davis led Freedom with 13 points. Moore finished with 11, while Ashley Favors and Anna Sleyzak had 10 points apiece for Bloomingdale.
