During the Kumquat Festival, Projects of Pasco, a nonprofit group that collects school supplies for disadvantaged children in east Pasco County, collected $240 for this year's school supply drive.
Last year Projects of Pasco served 892 children in the east Pasco area, providing each child with the prerequisite collection of school supplies outlined by the Pasco County school district.
This year, the organization got a head start on its collection drive Jan. 26 by hosting a $5 per car parking area on Seventh Street in Dade City, handling the overflow parking needed by Kumquat Festival attendees.
The parking area was donated for the day by landowners Richard and Helen Peterson of Dade City.
Overseen by Projects of Pasco president Anna Fulk and vice president Suse Hilton, the parking lot held 48 cars during the course of the day. Some drivers insisted on paying more than was required for their spots.
"One man told us, 'Five dollars is too cheap for what you're doing,'" said Fulk. "Others said, 'We're so glad we stopped here. Our money is going to needy children.'"
Starting in June, Projects of Pasco will set up school supply collection bins throughout the east Pasco area. In the meantime, those interested in supporting the effort can deliver donation checks to any Wachovia Bank, for deposit in the Projects of Pasco account.
"It's all for those needy children who get off the school bus with nothing," Fulk said.
