TAMPA - A non-profit organization is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of anyone involved in the death of a llama at Gaither High School.

Florida Voices for Animals Inc., designed to educate people about animal abuse, offered the reward following the death of an 8-month-old llama named Adonis. The llama suffered trauma to the head and died Wednesday in the Gaither High School agricultural barn.

"We are appalled at the continued reports of extremely cruel animal abuses in the Tampa Bay area," the organization wrote in a media release. "Research has shown that cruelty to animals often escalates to cruelty to humans and that the 'Circle of Violence' must be stopped to prevent the suffering of both humans and non-humans."

People involved in the death aren't eligible for the reward.

Adonis was one of about 25 animals living in the southwest corner of Gaither's campus and was part of the agricultural department. The school, which has about 2,400 students, is at 16200 N. Dale Mabry Highway.

An assistant principal for Gaither said Thursday that the school hoped people will come forward with information that leads to an arrest.

A reward of $500 is being offered through the school's crime watch.

Information should be reported to investigators handling this case, the Florida Voices for Animals release says.
