LAKELAND - Five Jesuit wrestlers won individual titles Saturday to lead the Tigers to the Class 1A-District 9 championship at McKeel Academy.
David Gonzalez (125 pounds), Kevin Nichols (130), Andrew Alizzi (135), Ben Reid (152) and Chris Kavouklis (189) won their finals.
"I'm thrilled and so proud of these guys," Coach Mike Scicchitano said.
Jesuit had 189.5 points. Tampa Prep (120 points), with four titlists, was second. Tampa Bay Christian (75.2) was fifth with three champions.
The unseeded Alizzi, who beat the top seed in the opener, beat second-seeded David Lopez of Lakeland Kathleen 8-2 in the 135-pound finals.
Gonzalez got the Tigers going in the fourth final by pinning Tampa Bay Christian's David Alonzo, followed by Nichols' second-period pin of Lennard's Carlos Martinez. Reid later had a first-period pin of Kathleen's Michael Jones, and Kavouklis beat Spoto's Rafael Rivera.
"We achieved our full potential," Kavouklis said, "and we proved that we can do some damage."
Four Tigers lost in the finals. Mike Popp (103 pounds) lost to Tampa Bay Christian's Rossi Bruno; Austin Boudreau (112) was pinned by Tampa Prep's Tyler Liberatore; Marco Crespo (119) lost to 2007 state champion Clark Glass of Christian; and Michael Lamoureux (171) was pinned by Mulberry's Cody Allen De Lapez.
In other finals, Tampa Bay Christian's Kyle Koziel (140 pounds) scored a 5-1 decision over Tampa Prep's Charles Tkatch; Tampa Prep's Matt Scarritt (145) beat Kathleen's Psalms Radway 8-3; Tampa Prep's Wes Jarrell (160) beat Kathleen's Miguel Bravo; Kathleen's Matt Jones (215) beat Mulberry's Chris Parham; and Tampa Prep heavyweight James Gift pinned McKeel's Greg Daugherty.
