TAMPA - Seffner Christian Academy girls basketball coach Greg Fawbush said his team didn't play its best game. But it was good enough to give the Crusaders the Class 1A-District 10 basketball championship Saturday with a 47-35 win against Cambridge Christian School.
Playing at Tampa Bay Christian Academy, Seffner was down 13-4 at the end of the first quarter, but surged late in the second quarter, taking a lead it would never relinquish. Bolstered by guard Ariello Jadlowski's 20 points, including three 3-pointers, Seffner (15-10) controlled much of the action under the net while hitting most of its open shots.
After leading by a point, 22-21 at the end of the second quarter, forward Jenny Moorer helped extend the Crusaders' lead to 32-28 with two minutes left in the third. She made five of six shots from the line and hit a 3-pointer midway through the third quarter.
Cambridge (13-10) pulled within five with five minutes left in the fourth, playing a sharp inside game, but a 3-point shot just outside the arc by Jadlowski with 3:55 left put the Crusaders up by nine, their biggest lead of the game.
After a Cambridge turnover with 50 second left, Jadlowski hit one more 3-pointer to seal the victory.
Fawbush said it was his team's ability to gain possession of loose balls that resulted in baskets that were the key to victory.
"We kept working hard, and in the end it was a lot of those loose balls that gave us quick baskets," he said.
Seffner's win means they will host Lakeland Victory Christian on Thursday in a regional quarterfinal.
