NEW PORT RICHEY - River Ridge's Sean Hitchcock and Ridgewood's Allyn Williamson took district titles Saturday during the Class 2A-District 5 tournament at Ridgewood's gym.
Hitchcock won the 140-pound title, decisioning Dunedin's Nick Posyton, 11-7.
Hitchcock gave plenty of credit to his coach.
"Coach Russ Schenck is amazing," Hitchcock said. "He's the best coach I have ever had."
"He Hitchcock wrestled a smart match," Schenck said. "I think he was a more experienced wrestler. He got in a couple of tough situations but wrestled it through. He wrestled his style."
Williamson won the 135-pound class by injury default. Brooksville Central's Vince Ramirez injured his shoulder early in the match and had to withdraw.
Springstead defending state champion Schuyler Swanton major-decisioned Ridgewood's Dean Stupar, 14-6.
"I came out and I was close in this one," Stupar said. "I beat him my sophomore year. I'm a senior. I tried to use my conditioning to my benefit."
"He came out after him," Ridgewood coach Pete Smith said. "He took a shot. You have to take a shot and take another shot."
The top four finishers in the tournament in each class qualified for the Class 2A-Region 2 meet Friday at Kissimmee Poinciana High.
Springstead won its 22nd district title. The Eagles took nine firsts and finished with 237 points, followed by Dunedin with 165 points and River Ridge with 146. Ridgewood was fifth with 56 points, Land O' Lakes was sixth with 46 and Wesley Chapel was eighth with 18.
