Published: February 4, 2008

TAMPA - A nonprofit organization is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of those involved in the death of a llama at Gaither High School.
Florida Voices for Animals, designed to educate people about animal abuse, offered the reward after the death of an 8-month-old llama named Adonis. The llama suffered trauma to the head and died Wednesday in the Gaither High School barn.

"We are appalled at the continued reports of extremely cruel animal abuses in the Tampa Bay area," the organization said in a statement. "Research has shown that cruelty to animals often escalates to cruelty to humans and that the 'circle of violence' must be stopped to prevent the suffering of both humans and nonhumans."

Adonis was one of about 25 animals living on Gaither's campus and was part of the agricultural department.

An assistant principal for Gaither said Thursday that the school hopes people will come forward with information that leads to an arrest.

A reward of $500 is being offered through the school's crime watch.
