The culmination of a months-long process for senior high school football players that included non-stop phone calls and text messages, countless visits to college campuses and constant hounding from members of the media will occur Wednesday when several Tampa Bay area prospects put pen to paper and sign college scholarships.
National Signing Day, the first day a high school senior can sign a binding national letter-of-intent to play for a college football program, is a day high school players long for, a day they celebrate the opportunity to move their playing careers to the next level and to continue their academic advancement.
More than 40 senior football players from Hillsborough County are expected to sign Wednesday, with their school choices ranging from Southeastern Conference's Auburn University, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and in-state programs Florida State, Florida and USF. Multiple signing ceremonies, with players being joined by parents and coaches, will be held at various high schools throughout the day.
Though most of the area's recruits have pledged solid, non-binding verbal commitments to programs, the beauty of National Signing Day is nothing is set in stone until that stroke of the pen, and it's not rare for a recruit to open some eyes by choosing a different school, thus providing the anticipation for the yearly occurrence.
