TREASURE ISLAND - Members of roughly 30 households will have to boil their water for two days because a 16-inch underground water main broke early this morning, Pinellas County Utilities officials said.
The main should be repaired by noon, said David Baker, manager of conservation resources for Pinellas County Utilities.
Treasure Island police say they received the report of the main breaking at 153 104th Ave. at 12:07 a.m. The break is just off Gulf Boulevard, and traffic along the busy thoroughfare has not been affected, utilities officials said.
Baker said the initial leak might have been relatively small, but once enough water poured out, the soil around it appeared to have become saturated and collapsed on the pipe, bursting it.
Utilities crews were delivering notices to the 30 households. The mandatory boil-water edict is in effect for two days, and the households will be notified, again by hand-delivered missives, when the tap water is safe, Baker said.
