Duke Breaks Through

Feb. 28, 1981

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, with an NIT-bound team in his first season, upset a No. 11-ranked UNC squad that eventually lost to Indiana in the national title game. On senior night, Duke's Gene Banks wore a tuxedo and threw roses to the crowd at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Banks hit the game-winner with 19 seconds remaining in overtime.

With Krzyzewski sidelined by exhaustion, the Blue Devils give a mighty effort against the No. 2-ranked Tar Heels. Jeff Capel's half-court buzzer-beater forced a second overtime, but UNC prevailed.

Duke's Chris Duhon drove the length of the court and hit a reverse layup with 6.5 seconds remaining, giving the No. 1-ranked Blue Devils a riveting victory.

The rivalry hit a fever pitch when UNC's Tyler Hansbrough, attempting an inconsequential layup with 14.5 seconds remaining, was struck by the right elbow of onrushing Duke player Gerald Henderson. Hansbrough, bloodied and bruised, suffered a broken nose and wasn't the same during the ACC and NCAA tournaments.

•Duke's Dick Groat had 48 points (19 of 37 from the field) against UNC on Feb. 29, 1952.

•In the same 1952 game, Duke's Bernie Janicki had 31 rebounds (still a school record) against UNC.

•UNC's York Larese made 21 of 21 free-throw attempts against Duke on Dec. 29, 1959.

•Duke's Art Heyman had 40 points against UNC on Feb. 23, 1963.

•UNC's Larry Miller made 13 of 14 field-goal attempts (32 points) against Duke in the 1967 ACC Tournament championship game.

•UNC's Sean May had 26 points and 24 rebounds against Duke on March 6, 2005.
