GAINESVILLE - The NCAA did not find any violations concerning University of Florida football coach Urban Meyer and the recruitment of junior-college transfer Carl Moore and Gators gymnast Maranda Smith.
"Allegations about impermissible telephone calls by the football staff have been reviewed by the NCAA and university, and at this time the information does not indicate any violations of NCAA rules occurred," Florida sports information director Steve McClain said Tuesday.
Florida's compliance office had been gathering information about phone calls made to Moore and Smith, his girlfriend, who were both students at Sierra (Calif.) Community College before transferring to Florida.
There was speculation that Meyer committed a secondary violation in recruiting Smith, which would have violated an NCAA bylaw that limits coaches to recruiting athletes in the sport they coach.
Tim Tebow was later linked to the investigation after the Sacramento Bee reported that Meyer had handed a cell phone to the quarterback after he won the Heisman so Tebow could try to entice Moore to play at Florida. Players are not allowed to recruit when directed by their coaches.
