TAMPA - The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority's board voted 5-0 this morning to approve a runway extension and hangar construction at Peter O. Knight Airport on Davis Islands.
The project, which is expected to begin in September, includes extending one of the airport's runways 175 feet closer to houses. Aviation Authority officials say the extension is needed to meet federal safety rules.
More than 200 residents signed petitions opposing the plans, citing concerns about safety and noise. They also said new hangars along Seddon Channel would block water views.
About two dozen residents spoke at this morning's board hearing, with about half of them in favor of the project and half of them opposed.
