In the Roman Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent - the 40 days leading up to the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The priest blesses ashes during Mass, then dips his thumb into them and makes a cross on a person's forehead, saying "Remember, man, that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return."
