TAMPA - The city council voted unanimously this morning to encourage the New York Yankees to rename Legends Field after Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.
The Hillsborough County Commission made a similar move Wednesday.
The Yankees already had the right to rename the field but wanted community support before moving forward.
"We are so grateful for his generosity to this community; it's the least we could do," Councilwoman Linda Saul-Sena said.
The measure was pushed by Commissioner Rose Ferlita and Councilman Charlie Miranda.
