WINTER HAVEN – A 52-year-old woman who survived a crash with a school bus is in critical condition at Lakeland Regional Medical Center today, the sheriff's office said.
Brenda Payne of 1399 40th St. N.W. was a passenger in a car that got sandwiched between a van and a school bus at 4:35 p.m. Wednesday at Avenue V and 34th Street.
The driver of the car, Lisa Sheffield, 45, of 26th Street N.W., died at the scene. Sheffield was driving west on Avenue V and failed to stop when she reached 34th Street, deputies said.
The driver of the van, Steve Irish, 27, was heading north on 34th Street, and the Polk County school bus was heading south on 34th Street. The van hit the driver's side and the bus hit the other side of Sheffield's 1986 silver Nissan Maxima, sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Wood said.
There were three students on the bus, which was coming from Lake Alfred-Addair Middle School. None was injured.
It appears neither Sheffield nor Payne was wearing a seat belt, Wood said.
