LAKEWOOD RANCH - If there was any thought that the Out-of-Door Academy girls basketball team would still be savoring its thrilling overtime win against Sarasota Christian, it was erased early Thursday in an easy rout of Academy at the Lakes in a Class 1A-Region 3 quarterfinal.
The Thunder, using a tenacious full-court press, sprinted to a 19-1 lead and never looked back in a 54-21 rout of the Wildcats.
Point guard Christine LaFrance led all scorers with 11 points - all in the first half - as the Thunder raced to a 35-12 lead. Teammate Mara Falahee added 10 for Out-of-Door (16-9).
"They came out ready," Thunder coach Carl Williams said. "We just really executed well. I can't complain."
LaFrance had several steals and scored three easy layups to lead the charge.
"We had to make sure we were focused on this game," LaFrance said. "Our press kind of set the tone for the night."
Courtney Waggoner erased a 1-0 Wildcats lead with a 3-point shot in the opening quarter. The Thunder then reeled off 16 straight points to put the game out of reach.
Ashley Soudal paced Academy at the Lakes (10-9) with 10 points.
