Bucs Hire Olson As Quarterbacks Coach

Published: February 8, 2008

TAMPA - The Bucs have pulled another recently fired coordinator out of the unemployment line.

A year after making former Broncos defensive coordinator Larry Coyer their defensive line coach, the Bucs on Thursday named former Rams offensive coordinator Greg Olson their new quarterbacks coach.

Olson spent two years running the Rams offense, which ranked sixth overall in 2006. His Rams attack slipped to 24th this past season, and it was in the wake of that finish that Rams coach Scott Linehan decided to make a change.

Olson was granted an opportunity to stay on as a position coach in St. Louis, but he opted to look elsewhere. He replaces Paul Hackett, who coached the Bucs' quarterbacks for three years.

The move to the Bucs reunites Olson with Jeff Garcia, who was the 49ers' quarterback when Olson, 44, broke into the NFL as a quarterbacks coach with San Francisco in 2001.

Olson spent one year working with Garcia and has spent six working as an assistant coach at the NFL level. He has also spent 15 seasons working as a coach in the college ranks.

The move leaves the Bucs staff with one significant vacancy, at running backs coach. The team has interviewed former Redskins running backs coach Earnest Byner, but it is believed the Bucs are considering other candidates.
