FORT MYERS - Academy of the Holy Names spent the second quarter and most of the third quarter chipping away at Fort Myers Dunbar's 14-point first-quarter lead on Thursday night.
And in just a few minutes the Tigers took it back for a 52-32 Class 3A-Region 3 quarterfinal victory over the Jaguars (19-10).
"I think we were all a little shocked in the first quarter," Holy Names coach Casey Higgins said. "You can see the pressure and see how athletic they are on tape. But it took us eight minutes to wake up."
By then, the Tigers (23-2) seemed in control, up 21-7 entering the second quarter. But the Jags tried to come back, thanks in part to their efforts to slow the game down.
The Jaguars cut the lead to three points, 30-27, with 4:53 left in the third quarter.
Selena Castillo's jumper sparked a seven-point outburst for Holy Names. Ali Daigle followed with a 3-pointer and Meaghann Ligori made a layup to put the Jaguars back in striking distance.
"We cut it to three and they put the pressure on and we just weren't able to handle it," Higgins said.
Katie Davis led Holy Names with 11 points.
