TAMPA - Sickles came out a little flat to open its first home playoff game in school history, but it didn't take long to find its rhythm. The Gryphons used a stifling defense and Britany Nunes' sharp shooting in a 53-35 victory over Sarasota in the Class 6A-Region 2 quarterfinals.
Sickles had three players score in double figures, with Nunes leading the way with a game-high 14 points.
Melissa Ramsey scored 13 points and Shawnta Snakovsky added 11.
With Sickles struggling to create any offense early in the first half, Snakovsky sparked a 12-4 run when she nailed a deep 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter. Nunes ended the run just before halftime with a 3-pointer of her own to give Sickles a 16-13 lead.
"That was a big shot for us because we came out a little tight and didn't do a good job of shooting the ball," Sickles coach Mark Key said.
"We weren't moving the ball well either and Snakovsky's 3-pointer kind of got us going."
The Gryphons kept the momentum into the second half and Nunes hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter that pushed the lead to 30-19. Sickles took advantage of 10 of Sarasota's 22 turnovers in the second half to build a commanding 46-27 lead midway through the fourth quarter on its way to a school-record 25th victory.
"Britany Nunes played well tonight, probably her best game since she's been here," Key said.
