Report: Schilling's Career In Jeopardy

Published: February 8, 2008

BOSTON - Curt Schilling has a "significant" shoulder injury that could require career-ending surgery, according to a report that also said the Red Sox looked into whether they could void the $8 million, 1-year contract he agreed to three months ago.

The Boston Herald reported on its Web site Thursday that Schilling could have an injury to his rotator cuff or labrum, one serious enough to require surgery that could end Schilling's career. The 41-year-old right-hander has said 2008 will be his last year.

Schilling did not respond to a telephone call or e-mail seeking comment, and his publicist, Katie Leighton, said Schilling would not have any comment Thursday. Red Sox spokesman John Blake said the team had no comment.

Schilling, who spent seven weeks on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis last season, went 9-8 with a 3.87 ERA during the regular season last year. In the playoffs, he went 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA to help the Red Sox win their second World Series in four seasons.

He agreed in November to a contract that allows him to earn an addition $5 million in performance and weight bonuses.

Martinez Addresses Cockfighting Video

After a video of Pedro Martinez and Juan Marichal at a cockfight was posted this week on YouTube, Martinez told the Mets the cockfight occurred at least two years ago.

In the wake of Michael Vick's recent dogfighting case, Martinez and Marichal are the latest sports stars to draw criticism for animal fighting.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent letters to both pitchers Thursday, calling on them to publicly apologize. The Humane Society of the United States also condemned the pair.

The fight takes place in their home country, the Dominican Republic, where cockfighting is legal and popular. It is banned throughout the United States.

"I understand that people are upset, but this is part of our Dominican culture and is legal in the Dominican Republic," Martinez said in a statement issued by the Mets.

By early Thursday, the video was removed "due to terms of use violation."

ORIOLES: Came to terms with right-hander Daniel Cabrera on a one-year contract for $2,875,000.

The Orioles also reached agreement with right-handed pitcher Jim Hoey and left-hander Troy Patton.

PIRATES: Left-hander Sean Burnett cleared waivers and was sent outright to Pittsburgh's Triple-A club in Indianapolis.

The move removes Burnett from the club's 40-man roster, but he will attend spring training next week as a nonroster player.

Burnett was the Pirates' first-round draft pick in 2000. He hasn't pitched in the majors since having left elbow surgery in 2004, followed by left shoulder surgery.

ROYALS: Signed right-hander Zack Greinke and outfielder Mark Teahen to one-year deals, getting their final two arbitration-eligible players under contract for 2008.

YANKEES: Completed a $30 million, four-year contract with starting second baseman Robinson Cano, 25.

STEROIDS HEARING: Roger Clemens met with leading members of the House committee investigating steroid use in Major League Baseball at the same time that his former trainer Brian McNamee was giving a sworn deposition on Capitol Hill.

The committee is taking sworn statements from Clemens and McNamee ahead of next week's hearing on drug use in the sport.
