McCarney Leaves Bulls For Gators

Published: February 9, 2008

University of South Florida defensive line coach Dan McCarney has left after one season to take the same position at the University of Florida.

McCarney, who made $140,000 at USF, will double his salary with the Gators.

"I had a wonderful year at USF," McCarney said. "I love these players; it was hard to say goodbye.

"But every decision I've made in my coaching career has been for personal, professional and financial reasons. Add them all up and this was a great opportunity."

In the past two months, McCarney was offered the head coaching jobs at South Alabama and Northern Illinois.

He also received inquiries for assistant jobs at Louisville, Pittsburgh, Kansas, Northwestern and Stanford.

"Florida is synonymous with championships and great national exposure," McCarney said. "It's a phenomenal place. Everyone in America admires and respects the job Urban Meyer has done there."

McCarney came to USF after 12 seasons as Iowa State's coach.

At USF, he helped develop defensive end George Selvie, who led the nation in tackles for loss.

"His experience as a head coach will be invaluable," Meyer, the Gators' coach, said in a statement. "He has a proven record as a recruiter and a development of talent."

With the loss of McCarney, USF has two openings on its staff.

Hocutt Named New AD At Miami

CORAL GABLES - Kirby Hocutt was hired as Miami's athletic director, replacing Paul Dee.

Hocutt had been the athletic director at Ohio University since 2005. The former Kansas State linebacker also spent six years in Oklahoma's athletic department, where he helped oversee a major fundraising campaign.

Dee, Miami's athletic director since 1993, announced plans to resign in May and is expected to join Miami's faculty June 1.

FSU SCHEDULE: Knowing it will be without at least 12 scholarship players suspended for the first three games, Florida State will begin its 2008 football season against two Division I-AA schools.

FSU, which released its schedule Friday, will play its first three games at home, including the first two against Division I-AA lightweights Western Carolina and UT-Chattanooga. The Southern Conference schools were a combined 3-19 last season.

The past three years, FSU opened on Labor Day night on ESPN, twice against Miami and last season at Clemson. But with at least 12 scholarship players facing three-game suspensions for their involvement in an academic cheating scandal, FSU avoided such early marquee matchups.

"I think it is a good schedule," Coach Bobby Bowden said in a statement.

Season tickets and individual tickets go on sale starting Friday at 6 p.m. Game times and TV information will be released later by the ACC.

APPALACHIAN STATE: The Mountaineers, who kicked off last year's wacky college football season with a stunning win at Michigan, will get an even tougher assignment next season when they open against defending national champion LSU.

The Mountaineers enter next season as the three-time defending champs in Division I's Football Championship Subdivision.

NOTRE DAME: Coach Charlie Weis, who built his coaching reputation as a play-caller while helping New England win three Super Bowls, won't be calling plays for the Fighting Irish next season.

Offensive coordinator Mike Haywood will call plays so Weis, coming off a dismal 3-9 season, can concentrate on his duties as head coach.

STANFORD: Ron Lynn was hired to be the team's new co-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.

Lynn, who has 38 years of coaching experience in college and the pros, will share the defensive coordinator duties with linebackers coach Andy Buh. The two will replace Scott Shafer, who left last month to take the defensive coordinator job at Michigan.
