TAMPA - Tampa Catholic's season came to an end Friday night as the third-seeded Crusaders couldn't quite overcome an early double-digit deficit and fell to second-seeded St. Petersburg Catholic 70-60 in a Class 3A-District 11 semifinal.
The Barons will face top-seeded Berkeley Prep in tonight's district final at Tampa Catholic. The Bucs cruised past fifth-seeded Lennard 70-32 in the other semifinal.
Tampa Catholic trailed by 13, 36-23, late in the second quarter before the Crusaders started to turn things around. They cut the lead to nine, 36-27, before halftime and opened the third quarter with a 13-5 run, getting six points from Alex Doyle during that stretch, to pull within one at 41-40 with 2:43 remaining in the third.
But the Barons broke things open again, thanks to the play of big men Casey Bobelis and Julian Dudley. The two combined to score 14 during a 16-6 run that helped the Barons take a 57-46 lead with 2:15 left in the game. Both players finished with 15 points.
St. Petersburg Catholic's Tracy Parks led all scorers with 24 points, while teammate Matt O'Donnell added 14, nine of those coming at the foul line late to help the Barons close out the game.
Doyle led the Crusaders with 14 points, while David Gonzalez and Christian Green also reached double figures with 11 and 10, respectively.
In the other semifinal, Archie Barnes scored eight of his 10 points in the first quarter to help Berkeley Prep race to a 26-9 lead after the opening quarter and the Bucs never looked back.
Berkeley Prep's Zak Kazanski led all scorers with 13 points, while Austin Suarez chipped in 11. Evan Locke led the Longhorns with a team-high 12 points.
