BATON ROUGE, La. - John Brady was fired as LSU's basketball coach Friday with his team struggling at 8-13, a dismissal that left him and his wife in tears at a farewell news conference.
"I've coached in the best league in the country, and I've coached a lot of great guys," Brady said during the afternoon news conference with LSU athletic director Skip Bertman. "They've done some great things that had not been done here in a long time."
Brady was the third-winningest coach in school history. His 192-139 record included two first-place finishes in the Southeastern Conference and a trip to the Final Four in 2006.
But after that 27-9 season the team fell to 17-15 for 2006-07, with a 5-11 conference mark, and things got worse this season - 8-13 overall so far, 1-6 in the SEC.
Brady's wife sobbed openly during Friday's news conference at LSU while Brady spoke haltingly, wiping away tears by the end of a long, sometimes rambling statement. He noted he inherited a program 10 years ago that was facing stiff penalties for NCAA violations and that it was on probation when he won his first SEC title in his third year.
"Under those circumstances it's a pretty good 10-year run," Brady said.
Associate head coach Butch Pierre will take over for the rest of the season.
MEMPHIS: Coach John Calipari says forward Robert Dozier will play but not start against Central Florida today.
Dozier did not play in the top-ranked Tigers' win against SMU on Wednesday after a former girlfriend filed a complaint with police this week, saying he hit her in the face during an argument.
Dozier is averaging 10.5 points and 7.3 rebounds for the Tigers.
MISSOURI: Senior guard Stefhon Hannah was arrested on third-degree assault charges in a brawl that left him with a broken jaw.
Hannah, Missouri's leading scorer the past two seasons, met with Columbia police Friday afternoon to discuss his involvement in a Jan. 27 altercation at the Athena nightclub in downtown Columbia. He gave no statement and was released on his signature.
SETON HALL: Guard Paul Gause will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee.
The 5-foot-11 junior was averaging 7.6 points, 3.2 points and 2.8 steals.
Women
MARYLAND 86, VIRGINIA 80: Laura Harper had 25 points and 15 rebounds, Marissa Coleman scored 21 and grabbed 12 rebounds, and No. 4 Maryland held off visiting Virginia to improve to 17-0 at home.
Kristi Toliver had 16 points and 12 assists, and Crystal Langhorne contributed 17 points for the Terrapins (25-2, 9-1 ACC). Maryland trailed by eight in the second half before rallying to earn its sixth straight win against Virginia (17-6, 5-2).
TENNESSEE: Star Candace Parker has a bruised left knee, and is listed day-to-day by the school medical staff. It is unclear if the 6-foot-4 junior will play when Tennessee hosts No. 7 Rutgers on Monday.
LEGAL: A judge tossed out a $19.1 million judgment awarded a former Fresno State women's basketball coach who had sued the school claiming gender discrimination, and ordered a new trial unless she accepts a smaller sum.
Former coach Stacy Johnson-Klein has until Feb. 22 to decide whether she'll accept a $6.6 million award instead.
A jury found the school wrongfully terminated and discriminated against the coach, and awarded Johnson-Klein the historic judgment in December.
