TAMPA - Tampa Prep will host Calvary Christian for the Class 2A-District 9 championship tonight after dominating wins against their semifinals opponents, Bishop McLaughlin and Indian Rocks Christian.
Both teams took early double-digit leads and led for their entire games as Tampa Prep beat Bishop McLaughlin 63-39 and Calvary Christian beat Indian Rocks Christian 56-40.
In the first game of the night Friday, Marcos Quinones led Calvary Christian with his 19-point performance, making eight field goals with two 3-pointers.
"I think it's just another step. We are ready to play today. We are just doing our job," Quinones said.
Mo Brown was the second-leading scorer for the Warriors with his 17-point night. He went seven of eight from the line in the second half.
"We hit free throws down the end and that's what we needed," Calvary coach Dave Bintz said.
At no point was Tampa Prep threatened by Bishop McLaughlin as the Terrapins opened up the first quarter with a 16-5 run and never looked back.
Jamal Cherry was the leading scorer for the Terrapins with 16 points. His three 3-pointers kept his team comfortably out in front.
"Jamal had a great game. He played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. I was happy with the way Jamal played, he shot the ball very well," Tampa Prep coach Joe Fenlon said.
David Waller also had a big night with his 15 points. Mike Harrison contributed six points from the bench for the Terps.
"Mike is instant energy, just add sweat," Fenlon said. "He's done great for us. His role has gotten bigger as the years have gone on. He does a lot of things kids do not want to do, things that do not make the stat sheet."
