A Worthy Name For Ballpark

Published: February 10, 2008

As a resident of the Kansas City area through the 1970s and early '80s and a fan of the Royals during their rivalry years with the colorful but bizarre Yankees, suffice it to say the George Steinbrenner was far from the top of my list of admired or respected people.

Now, as a nearly 20-year resident of Tampa, my baseball loyalties have fully shifted to the hometown Rays, and while the somewhat more mellow Yankees remain a thorn in the side, my attitude toward Steinbrenner has seen a total transformation.

The man is a community treasure. His contributions to a wide array of worthy causes and individuals in need are beyond generous; they reflect a benevolent spirit and character of the highest level. Most have been done silently; he gives simply because it is the right thing to do.

I applaud the efforts of Councilman Charlie Miranda and Commissioner Rose Ferlita to rename Legends Field for this legendary community figure.
