CINCINNATI - South Florida's women's basketball team was unable to win consecutive games for the first time since December as the Bulls fell 74-67 to Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon.
Looking to carry the momentum from a win against No. 25 DePaul on Tuesday, the Bulls fell flat to open as Cincinnati (11-12, 2-9 Big East) jumped to a 13-0 lead through the first 4:12 of the game. Porche Grant finally got the Bulls on the board with 15:20 left in the first half.
The Bearcats entered halftime with a seven-point lead, but USF (12-11, 2-8) opened the second half with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 40-39 on a 3-pointer by Shantia Grace.
After the Bearcats pulled out to a 9-point lead with 15:15 to play, the Bulls were again able to cut into their deficit, going on a 9-2 run to get within two. But the Bulls' shooting went south in the final 5:36, as they hit just two field goals and scored seven points down the stretch.
Kahla Roudebush led the Bearcats with 25 points and nine rebounds, while Natasha Grabowski had 17 points as Cincinnati moved within a game of .500 for the season.
TAMPA 67, FLORIDA TECH 56: DeShaydia Mackey scored 15 points as the University of Tampa women avenged an early-season loss at Florida Tech.
With the game tied at 29 at halftime, the Spartans (17-4, 9-2 Sunshine State Conference) pulled away in the second half, using a 9-2 run that started with 11:47 to play to take a 52-43 lead with 5:39 left.
Mackey was one of five Spartans to score in double figures.
Florida Tech (10-11, 2-8) was led by Lynisha Nelson, who led all scorers with 21 points.
SAINT LEO 60, LYNN 59: Freshman Whitley Washington hit a 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Saint Leo women (10-11, 3-7) to a Sunshine State Conference win over visiting Lynn University (16-6, 7-4).
Despite trailing for most of the second half, the Lions pulled within two late.
Following a missed free throw by Lynn's Jade Williams with eight seconds to play, Saint Leo's Dominique Daniels pulled down her eighth rebound of the game. Washington caught the outlet pass, and with time winding down she launched a shot from beyond the arc that banked in to give the Lions the win.
Tampa Men Take 7th Straight Win
TAMPA - The No. 17 University of Tampa men's basketball team won its seventh straight game with a 95-89 victory over Florida Tech.
Trailing 69-68 with 8:54 to play, the Spartans (16-4, 9-2 SSC) went on an 11-1 run that included a pair of 3-pointers by Chris King. That was all the Spartans needed as they held on for the victory to split the season series with Florida Tech (16-5, 5-5).
King enjoyed a career day, setting a career high with 27 points to lead the Spartans. He finished 11-for-16 from the field, including 5-for-9 from 3-point range.
Jeremy Black and Johnathan Ball added 19 points apiece, while Black also grabbed a team-high 19 rebounds for UT.
LYNN 69, SAINT LEO 63: The Saint Leo men came back from a 21-point deficit, but could not complete the rally before falling to Lynn (12-10, 5-6).
Lynn outscored the Lions 8-0 in the final 3:15 of the game to snap a four-game losing streak overall and a three-game losing streak to Saint Leo (10-11, 3-7).
