AVON PARK - Paced by two regional champions, Pasco scored 86 points to finish in third place in the Class 1A-Region 2 wrestling meet Saturday at South Florida Community College.
The Pirates' Ray Perez won the 189-pound weight class, teammate Eric Stroud finished first in the 215-pound division and Videl Jimenez placed second at 103.
The top four from each weight class advanced to the state finals, which begin Thursday in Lakeland.
Gulf finished fourth in the 34-team field with 84.50 points, and the Buccaneers were led by a first-place finish at 103 pounds by Richard O'Connor, Jordan Holding's victory in the 130-pound division and Martin Levinson finishing fourth at 171 pounds.
"I would have liked to take more to the dance next week," said eighth-year Gulf coach Travis DeWalt. "I'm happy with the way we wrestled in the finals, because we wrestled hard and smart. Our goal is to put some guys on the podium at state."
Hudson finished seventh with 72.50 points, as Devinlee Brown won the 171-pound weight class, Travis Tindell finished first at heavyweight and Tony Germano placed second for the Cobras at 160.
Zephyrhills came in 17th place with 34.50 points, as Nick Hynes placed second at 112 and Robbie Kunkle finished third at 140.
Sunlake finished 21st with 31 points, as Jarrett Baker placed second at 189 pounds. Wiregrass finished 29th with 11 points.
