TAMPA - With drumbeats, soulful singing and more than a little foot stomping, people gathered at the John F. Germany Public Library on Sunday afternoon to celebrate the diverse history of black music, from its African roots to its connection to gospel and hip hop. Performers included the Kuumba Dancers, an African drumming and dance troupe; gospel group Derek Smith and the New Dimensions; and Tampa's poet laureate, James Tokley.
The performances were part of the Hillsborough County Library System's events marking Black History Month.
