Regarding "Wondering 'What If?' " (Letters, Feb. 4):
I'm writing to agree with Roger McAllister on his comments regarding Republicans' efforts to change Social Security. He explains how Wall Street ruined the mortgage industry, but doesn't mention that Congress threatened them with penalties and tighter regulation if they didn't get more creative with mortgage requirements.
Regardless of what the AARP and other scare-mongers told the public, according to the Social Security Administration Web site, the ratio of workers to beneficiaries in 1940 was 159.4 to 1; by 1950 that number had decreased to 16.5 to one; and by 2000 that number had further decreased to only 3.4 workers' taxes supporting each retiree, a number that will inevitably continue to decrease.
I have five grandchildren. I just can't wait until a very few years from now when each and every one of the little rascals has to pay enough in payroll taxes to support one retiree.
