NEW PORT RICHEY - Roadblocks, heavy equipment and long ditches where streets ought to be have been part of the downtown landscape far longer than anyone anticipated when the Missouri Avenue drainage project began.
But there is an end in sight to views like the one on Adams Road south of Main Street, according to acting Public Works Director Sherman Applegate. April 29 is the target completion date for the $2.17 million project, a full six months later than originally expected.
The project, which runs from five blocks along Adams Road and three blocks along Missouri Road, is aimed at fixing the area's problems with flooding. The project includes installation of a stormwater drainage, collection and filtration system.
Ironically, an overabundance of groundwater is one of the reasons the project has taken so much longer to complete than expected, Applegate said, along with difficulties working around underground utilities.
