TAMPA - City workers on Wednesday found the body of a dog killed two days earlier by an alligator at Al Lopez Park.

The body of Freddy, a 5-year-old, 19-pound cairn terrier, was found near the pond where the alligator that is now being stalked by a state-hired trapper grabbed the dog Monday morning.

The trapper was unable to capture the alligator Monday but will return to the park. Bad weather on Tuesday kept her from trying then. The gator is said to be at least 5 feet long.

The dog's owner, Sarah Frey, 37, said she is considering having the dog cremated. Freddy was Frey's first dog, and she raised him from a puppy.

On Monday, she and Freddy had finished a lap around the park and she let Freddy off his leash. The dog ran to the park's southern pond and briefly out of her sight.

Witnesses told the city's Parks and Recreation Department that the alligator, which was a common sight for park visitors, grabbed the dog.

19 pounds, a good size dog. I know gators. That had to be one small gator, or no one would have ever found the whole dog.

Dakota, the last story they had up had a old man that said he saw the gator with fur coming out of his mouth so Im thinking a cottonmouth is probably not to blame.

If this would have happened in Lakeland the word dog would have been replaced with meth-head.

Haha tevans...there are a lot of those here in Lakeland. I believe it was a crack-head that got attacked by a gator last year though...

Yes JulieAnn81 you are right but still humorous none the less..he he he. Its sad that Im more upset about a dog getting eaten by a gator than a human.

Are they changing their minds now that the body has been found. Is the alligator still on death row?

This is news. A dog was attacked by a gator in a very popular park in the middle of a city. Thousands of people go to this park or have grown up going to the park. We've all seen gators there and now we find out that one is more aggressive than others.

This is news folks. If tbo.com didn't publish this article and tomorrow a kid gets attacked, some of you would be screaming that the news media ignored the threat.

This article is also called local flavor and in this instance the flavor was terrier. :-)

I think it's terrible thata they are making her out as the victim. It's her fault her dog is gone. I know what it's like to lose an animal to another animal. There are leash laws for a reason, to protect you and your dog. Thats especially true for Florida where there are gators in every decent body of fresh water. If you've just moved to Florida it's your responsibility to know the laws and dangers of this state. I think she needs to be fined and the press needs to stop making her look like a victim. I'm willing to push for her to be cited.

I read the comments that were removed and there wasn't anything objectionable...especially compared to other stuff I have read on this board. My post asking TBO about the removals was also removed. Hmmmm...I wonder if the St Pete Times has been routed in my new neighborhood....at least it is a fraction of the editorial mistakes.

Give the woman her dog back and two tickets. One for letting her dog run without a leash and the other for feeding an alligator.
As for all the new censorship, what's up with that? If you don't want comments don't open stories up to them then.

I just had another comment removed from the story about Pinellas clerk playing cupid. I just want to know why its ok to give services away to a select few for free when so much is going on about property taxes. But apparently TBO found that question objectionable. Seriously folks...they are pulling stuff off these boards leaft and right today...there is no freedom of speech here.

As for the censorship it is probably due to the posters not following the terms of service. I have posted on here for several years and have never been censored. However I have posted on many controversial issues and done so without using profanity or otherwise. Perhaps if people posted in a civil manner then they would not be censored.

What's really funny is all the silly reactions on here about a non story. Let's see, we can ticket her for letting the dog loose and that will really teach her a lesson and I'm sure bring the dog back to life.
We should all feel horrible for the poor gator that will lose it's life. Is that before or after we have a dinner of chicken/steak/fish?? Cry me a river!
