TAMPA - An attempted murder suspect's cell phone calls allowed Avon Park police to track him to Tampa on Wednesday, Avon Park's interim police chief said today.
Paul Dian Hamilton
Paul Dian Hamilton swung a machete at his live-in girlfriend Sunday, striking her 10 to 12 times, Avon Park police Cmdr. Michael J. Rowan said.
Tampa police arrested Hamilton, 34, about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Hamilton's machete blows struck 27-year-old Cadean Camille Campbell's head, shoulder, chest and arms, Rowan said.
"We don't have all the facts on what started the dispute," Rowan said. "We haven't had a chance to speak with the victim yet. She's still in this hospital and being sedated."
Campbell is in critical condition, he said.
When the Avon Park man was arrested Wednesday at 1014 E. Comanche Ave., detectives spoke with him about the machete incident, Rowan said. He was cooperative and provided "pertinent information" to police. The machete hasn't been found, and police are looking for it.
Hamilton, of 415 W. Hall St., was charged with attempted second-degree murder.
He remained in Orient Road Jail today. His bail was not set.
