Score one for the regal beagle.
Uno, the first beagle to win Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club, has vaulted the breed of Underdog and Snoopy to the highest echelon of doggie stardom.
The blue ribbon was fitting - not just for Uno's fine form, but because beagles are a traditional favorite in American households.
Uno is no pretentious poodle, no stuck-up setter and no nose-in-the-air Airedale terrier. Beagles are loyal family pets and valued hunting dogs. They're a populist pup, perfect for the times.
The new top dog celebrated by baying loudly as the crowd cheered, then chewing the microphones of reporters trying to interview his handlers.
Those who find themselves charmed by this champion shouldn't rush off to find beagle breeders. Loving beagles await good homes at such organizations as the Tampa Bay Beagle Rescue, Hillsborough County Animal Services and other local shelters.
Like Uno, these beagles deserve a chance to prove they, too, can be best in show.
