Regarding "Where's St. Michael When You Really Need Him?" by Garrison Keillor (Other Views, Feb. 1) and "Pam's Book Club" by Karen Haymon Long (Baylife, Feb. 4):
Thank you for the one-two punch in favor of reading via the two articles that you ran last week. Reading is a vehicle to strengthen our society. Keillor promoted the fundamental need for not blocking reading initiatives by bickering political parties and Mayor Pam Iorio, the only mayor in Florida hosting a TV show about books, is inspiring children that reading can be a lot of fun.
Per Keillor, "Teaching children to read is a fundamental moral obligation of the society. That 27 percent are at serious risk of crippling illiteracy is an outrageous scandal."
Bravo to Iorio, Keillor and The Tampa Tribune for helping us to be aware for our kids' future! Reading is the key to everything!
