DENVER - Colorado Rockies reliever Matt Herges and first base coach Glenallen Hill have issued written apologies for using performance-enhancing substances.
Herges says he has "no excuse for my actions" and says he's deeply remorseful. He said he's actually glad he was implicated in the Mitchell Report on drugs in baseball because it led him to do some soul-searching and clear his conscience over his "dirty little secret."
Herges said he knows he's going to pay the price in the public's eye but has been surprised by the forgiveness shown him by those close to him.
Hill says he "made mistakes and poor decisions in my personal and professional life." He says those mistakes came late in his playing career.
Both issued their statements Wednesday, the same day Roger Clemens his former personal trainer, Brian McNamee, testified before Congress about drug use in baseball.
ATHLETICS: Right hander Chad Gaudin, who underwent operations on his left hip and right foot on Dec. 18, hopes to be throwing of a mound by March 1.
The former Devil Ray was 11-13 with a 4.42 ERA last season in his first year as a member of the A's rotation.
BLUE JAYS: Closer B.J. Ryan said he expects to be ready for opening day after having Tommy John elbow surgery last May.
DODGERS: Right-hander Takashi Saito has agreed to a $2 million, one-year contract.
Saito, 38, who can earn an additional $200,000 in incentives, was 2-1 with a 1.40 ERA and 39 saves in 43 chances with the Dodgers last season, and made the NL All-Star team.
MARINERS: Left-hander Erik Bedard, obtained last week by Seattle, was named the Opening Day starter.
Bedard was expected to compete with Felix Hernandez for the top spot in Seattle's rotation.
PHILLIES: Kris Benson, 33, agreed to terms on a minor-league contract after missing last season following shoulder surgery.
The right-hander will head to spring training with a chance to compete with Adam Eaton, J.D. Durbin and Chad Durbin for a spot at the end of the Phillies rotation.
The contract is contingent on Benson passing a physical.
