If Robinson freshman Devin Zinkosky was hoping to earn a spot on the school's varsity team next year, his mother and grandmother definitely did enough to convince football coach Mike DePue to put him on the team.
Zinkosky's mother, Tammy, and her mother recently entered a contest sponsored by Campbell's Soup and won a $17,000 prize that the family decided to donate to Robinson's athletic department. With the money, Robinson will renovate its weight room facility.
"We are thrilled," Robinson athletic director Marcia Monk said. "It was something we desperately needed. That weight room has not been touched in years."
Monk said work has already begun on the facility.
"Walls have been painted and some mirrors have been put up," she said. Monk said the equipment will be delivered to the school next week.
"We are going to have a brand new weight room that will be available to all athletes," DePue said. "It's going to be a great improvement for athletics at Robinson."
DePue said Zinkosky played on the junior varsity team last year and seriously planned on moving him up to varsity this summer.
"I guess I have to put him on varsity now," DePue joked.
TAMPA PREP TIME CHANGE: Two straight days of heavy rain in South Florida have forced the postponement of Wednesday's boys state soccer tournament at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. That change has pushed back matches slated for today, including Tampa Prep's Class 2A semifinal showdown against Maitland Orangewood Christian. That game is now tonight at 7.
The changes have not yet affected Friday's 5A state semifinal game between Jesuit and Wharton, scheduled for 2 p.m.
Here's the revised schedule:
Today - 3A semifinals: Jacksonville Bolles vs. Plantation American Heritage, 8 a.m.; Orlando Lake Highland Prep vs. Melbourne Central Catholic, 10 a.m.; 4A semifinals: St. Augustine Nease vs. Golden Gate, noon; Gulf Breeze vs. Merritt Island, 2 p.m.; 2A semifinals: Jacksonville Providence vs. Delray Beach American Heritage, 5 p.m.; Orangewood Christian vs. Tampa Prep, 7 p.m.
Friday - 3A championship, 8 a.m.; 4A championship, 10 a.m.; 5A semifinals: Wharton vs. Jesuit, noon; Fleming Island vs. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas, 2 p.m.; 6A semifinals: Port Orange Spruce Creek vs. Miami Varela, 5 p.m.; Weston Cypress Bay vs. Ocoee, 7 p.m.
Saturday - 2A championship, noon; 5A championship, 2:30 p.m.; 6A championship, 5 p.m.
BOYS BASKETBALL: Catch 47 will air live the Class 5A region quarterfinal between Land O' Lakes at Brandon tonight at 7.
Brandon (21-4) is led by senior guard Blake Allen (19.3 ppg) while Land O' Lakes (21-7) is led by senior Jerome Harrison (18.6 ppg).
"We've been on Bright House five or six times and we haven't lost yet," Brandon coach Mark Hermann said. "High school kids love that stuff. It's going to be a great matchup."
The Gators will be without guard P.J. Potts after his ejection in the 5A-District 7 final, a 66-65 loss to Ridgewood.
Meanwhile, Armwood senior guard Adam Sollazzo, the District 13 (Hillsborough County) Player of the Year, will visit East Tennessee State this weekend, Armwood boys basketball coach Jeff Pafunda said.
FOOTBALL RECRUITING: King coach Earl Garcia III said defensive lineman Joe Level will visit Missouri University of Science and Technology this weekend.
VOLLEYBALL: Former Durant and Hillsborough Community College middle blocker Brittany Wilson has committed to Eckerd College. Wilson was named to the Tribune's All-Hillsborough County second team in 2005.
