Men's Fitness magazine named Fowler White Boggs Banker, a Florida-based law firm, as one of the 15 fittest American companies.
The firm, with 600 employees in seven Florida offices, including Tampa and St. Petersburg, was recognized for introducing personal fitness in the office. That's something Men's Fitness believes improves individual well-being and the company's bottom line.
"Study after study shows workplace fitness helps decrease absenteeism, increases productivity, reduces turnover and ultimately produces a healthier workforce that requires significantly lower medical costs," editors say.
According to the magazine, Fowler White Boggs Banker launched its efforts after the American Heart Association challenged corporate America to get its employees moving in company-sponsored walking programs. The company took it a step farther by challenging employees to take at least 1,084 steps every day. That's the distance between the firm's eight offices.
The company got creative, giving each employee a custom-made pedometer with the company's name on it. More than half of the company's employees participate in its Start! Walking program today. And it doesn't hurt that each office is competing to outstep the other, the magazine noted.
