Man Injured In Watercraft Crash

TAMPA - A Montana man was injured in a watercraft crash near Clearwater Beach this afternoon.
Derrick Avery, 25, was taken to Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater following the 3:20 p.m. crash in the Gulf of Mexico, Pinellas County deputies say. He suffered a cut to his left leg.
The incident occurred when Thomas J. Erben, 25, of Tampa was operating his personal watercraft about 100 feet behind Avery's watercraft, a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office release says.
Avery stopped suddenly and Erben ran over the top of his watercraft, according to the release. Erben was cited for careless operation of a vessel, a second-degree misdemeanor.
An investigation is ongoing, deputies say.
