Gov. Charlie Crist has designated dates for Tampa Bay area voters to elect a new representative for state House District 55.
The state will hold a special primary election on March 25 and a general election on April 15 to replace Frank Peterman Jr., D-St. Petersburg, who Crist recently tapped to lead the Department of Juvenile Justice.
The district encompasses parts of Pinellas, Hillsborough, Sarasota and Manatee counties. Peterman was the ranking Democrat on the House Juvenile Justice Committee; his resignation from the Legislature takes effect today.
The winner will take office immediately upon election on April 15. Voters will elect a new representative for the seat in November. To date, three Democrats and no Republicans have filed for candidacy in the fall election. None have filed yet for the special election this spring, the secretary of state's office said Wednesday.
