Bayshore Christian Advances

TAMPA - Fourth-quarter rebounds and clutch free throws propelled Bayshore Christian past Kissimmee Southland Christian, 59-51. The Warriors will host Seffner Christian Tuesday in the regional semifinal.

Bobby Dyer led his team in the absence of suspended leading scorer, Fred Lewis, and scored 22 points, a season-high. Dyer also made the final six Warrior field goals, scoring 12 fourth-quarter points.

"Without Fred, some people had to step up, Carson Day and Jacob Ammerman stepped up big today," Dyer said

Day and Ammerman went 5-for-8 in free throws in the fourth quarter. Those points helped extend the Warriors slim three-point lead over the Flames going into the final minute of the game to eight.

A few desperation 3-point shots from the Flames were either blocked or off target, leading them to foul Day, who had practiced his free-throw shooting all week long.

"I was just trying to stay focused and knock them down. Last game I airballed one so I wanted to make sure I hit these," Day said.

Bayshore Christian came out flat in the first half, turning the ball over 11 times. It kept pace with Kissimmee Southland Christian by outrebounding them 16-9 and outscoring them 15-10 in the second quarter. The Warriors went into the locker room leading 26-23.

The game featured nine ties and numerous lead changes. The Warriors continued to dominate the boards, with 17 more added in the second half. The Flames narrowed the Warrior lead to three with the help of Heber Garcia, who scored 11 fourth-quarter points. Garcia also went 8-for-9 in the second half on free throws and was the leading scorer for the Flames with 23.

"We knew this team would go to the glass. I think our guys got fatigued toward the end and could have done a better job blocking out. We lost to a good team. They came down and executed, hit their free throws and did what they had to do to win this game," Kissimmee Southland coach Sean Johnson said.
