The FHSAA released a report Friday stating the organization will address bacterial issues in high school sports. The organization announced Friday it has signed a contract with CSG/SportsCoatings that will provide antimicrobial products and treatments for its 748 FHSAA member schools.
"The FHSAA and its member schools are committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of our student-athletes," FHSAA commissioner John Stewart said in a release. "We are pleased that we have been able to reach an agreement with CSG/SportsCoatings to make its antimicrobial products and treatments available to our member schools."
FOOTBALL: Freedom WR Larry Thompson has committed to Jacksonville University.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder finished the season with 21 catches for 337 yards and four touchdowns.
"I finally know where I'm going," Thompson said. "I feel like I made the right decision. They said I'd definitely get playing time."
Western Kentucky and Appalachian State were also interested.
VOLLEYBALL: Former Tampa Catholic coach Kevin Reynolds has been named the new coach at Academy of the Holy Names, athletic director Pete Young said.
Reynolds will fill the position for former coach Doug Chinchar, who resigned after the season.
BOYS BASKETBALL: Armwood senior G Adam Sollazzo was recently named the Tampa Bay Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year, Armwood coach Jeff Pafunda said. Sollazzo was also selected the District 13 (Hillsborough County) Player of the Year and county Class 5A Player of the Year. Sollazzo, along with Tampa Prep senior forward David Waller, will represent the county at the Florida Athletic Coaches Association North vs. South All-Star Game at Florida Southern in Lakeland on March 14-15.
Tampa Prep coach Joe Fenlon said he received a fax Thursday morning confirming Waller's spot on the all-star team. Last year, Tampa Prep's Walter Perkins played in the all-star game as did Wharton's Shawn Vanzant.
SOFTBALL: Mitchell C Courtney Stager broke a knuckle on her right hand Thursday night in the Mustangs' 5-4 loss to Countryside.
The injury took place during a play at the plate as Stager came home from second base in the third inning.
"She's got a temporary cast now and will be in a permanent cast for three weeks," Mitchell coach Scott Bisbe said. "She could be back for senior night before district, that's what we're hoping."
Stager signed a letter-of-intent to play softball for Florida State in November. Stephanie Palazzolo will take Stager's place in the Mustang lineup.
SOCCER: Tampa Prep's Chelsea Klotz, Newsome's Rudi Rodriguez and Plant's Chelsea Hearne will represent Hillsborough as members of the West All-Stars in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association 2008 Senior All-Star Classic. The matches will take place at Port St. Lucie High School on March 7-8 with the West's first game against Florida's North team at 6 p.m. March 7.
The team will be coached by former international player and coach and Western Chair Coordinator John Matin, who employs a Brazilian style of soccer that emphasizes short, quick passes. Matin will be joined by assistant coach George Fotopoulos (head coach at Gaither) and goalkeeper coach John Mendoza (head coach at Cambridge).
