Some players believe in drawing trumps ASAP - as soon as possible. In their case, ASAP should stand for "Always Say a Prayer."
South won the first club in dummy and tried to draw trumps with a finesse. West took the king and continued clubs, and South was beyond help. He won, drew trumps and lost a diamond to the ace, but the defense cashed a club, and West got the king of spades later. Down one.
Before South decides whether to draw trumps, he must count possible losers. He has a diamond, a spade, a club and maybe a trump. South can establish an extra spade winner for a club discard but must do so before the defenders set up a club trick.
South wins the first club in his hand and leads a spade. When West takes the king and leads another club, South wins, cashes the queen of spades, leads a trump to his ace and throws dummy's last club on the ace of spades.
If East had the king of spades, South would say a prayer over the trump suit and try the finesse.
